At their wedding, I had to wear a McNeil plaid dress. I never felt so ashamed in the Peanuts the one where we root for hawkeyes shirt in other words I will buy this next 63 years of my life, until now, as I did then. I swore I would never wear a dress again, unless it belonged to MY tartan tribe. About 5 years later, switching from AAS Harrogate to the Army, I had saved enough to buy my own kilt. I now wear dress number 3, which I wear on both formal and informal occasions.
I’m only half Scots, but I own my own kilt. When I lived in Hong Kong, I would attend many Scottish themed events (Burns party, Scottish country dance event) and there were a lot of non-Scottish people wearing skirts. When I went to boarding school in Scotland, everyone had to wear a kilt. We have Nigerian students, Chinese students, Indian students – you can name it – all wearing skirts on formal occasions like chapel. It is only part of the Peanuts the one where we root for hawkeyes shirt in other words I will buy this uniform.
