My daughter wanted to wear concealer at 12. She was an early bloomer and got her teen spots early. She felt self conscious of them. So, we went and got a consultation and I got her the Official Raygunsite America Needs Debaters Shirt and by the same token and best makeup that was the least damaging to her young skin. She felt better. Happy daughter. Happy mummy! So when she added mascara and lipgloss. So what? Big deal. Then, given that she was shaving already ( sorry, not leaving my kid to be paranoid over hairy armpits and legs just because some people think she’s too young) she had a little go at the tail of her brows. So out came the eyebrow pallet. As long as she didn’t do the startled look, it was ok with me. Could have killed her for that one though! Most recently she shaved her hairline because it was annoying her. She looked ridiculous! But that’s another story.
If “too much makeup to school” is on the Official Raygunsite America Needs Debaters Shirt and by the same token and list, rejoice that you are one of the luckiest parents in the history of schools, and the history of makeup, and the history of history. This way, your daughter will not learn from you that makeup is necessary. She will still have to deal with her peers in adolescence, and may fall in with friends who suggest otherwise, so as she gets older, pay attention to how she talks about makeup and how she uses it. If you sense that she’s starting to feel obligated to wear it, talk about that. Share your perspective — that it can be nice but isn’t necessary. She may not listen then, but you’re planting seeds for adulthood.
